Spring is a time for new beginnings, so why not consider beginning a new and improved oral hygiene regimen that will help you keep your smile in great shape for life? Luckily, your dentist will be happy to help you find the best ways to clean your teeth and maintain the health of your gums. Here’s a brief guide to a few excellent habits you can adopt to preserve your oral health and the beauty of your grin.
Spruce Up Your Brushing and Flossing Habits
Brushing and flossing are two habits that are absolutely crucial to keeping your teeth in excellent condition. When you brush, clean your teeth using short, gentle, circular strokes using a soft-bristled appliance to eliminate plaque and food residue without scratching your enamel. It’s best to do this at least twice a day, once before breakfast and once before bed, but ideal to also brush after meals as long as you wait at least half an hour before doing so.
When you floss, cut a length of about fourteen inches from the pack and hold a one-inch section taut between your hands. Gently slide the thread between a pair of teeth and carefully work it against either side while avoiding pressing too deep into the gum tissue. When finished, lift the floss from between the teeth, move on to the next pair with a clean section of thread, and repeat this process until you have treated your whole smile. While flossing once a day is considered adequate, it’s best to floss between meals.
Schedule Your Next Dental Checkup
The American Dental Association recommends seeing your dentist every six months for routine exams and cleanings. These allow your oral health provider to thoroughly clean your teeth and gums, monitor your mouth for signs of trouble, and address problems in their early stages. This can save you much discomfort as well as vast sums of money by preventing destructive infections that require costly restorative treatments.
Don’t pass up your chance to enhance your oral health with improved hygiene. Consulting with your dentist can help you understand how to take excellent care of your smile.
