Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
Dental insurance is similar to standard health insurance in many ways, but there is one big difference: while health insurance is primarily designed to help patients treat problems, dental insurance is more focused on helping patients prevent problems from developing in the first place. That’s why, with most plans, services like checkups and cleanings receive the highest amount of coverage. Knowing this one fact alone can easily help you save thousands on your dental care over the years.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
Even though every dental insurance plan is slightly unique compared to all others, typically, they all provide coverage that looks something like this:
- Preventive services are covered 80-100%
- Basic restorative services (fillings, bonding) are covered 50-70%
- Major restorative services (crowns, bridges, dentures, extractions) are covered 50%
- Cosmetic services are usually NOT covered because they are elective procedures
- Some plans offer a fixed amount of money to cover orthodontic care as well, though this may only be applicable to metal braces

Our team is happy to accept and file claims for plans from almost any provider, but we recommend giving us a call ahead of your appointment so we can verify your benefits.
