How Do Traditional Braces Work?

Traditional braces consist of two components: metal brackets and an archwire. The brackets are bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth before your dentist threads an archwire through them. Regular tightening of the wire applies consistent pressure to close gaps, straighten teeth, and move smiles into alignment.
The process typically takes 2-3 years and yields beautiful results, as long as you commit to wearing a custom retainer after your braces come off.
What Orthodontic Issues Can Braces Fix?

One distinct benefit of traditional braces is their ability to address a range of orthodontic issues, including bite misalignment, crowded or crooked teeth, and gaps between teeth.
Bite Misalignment
Underbites, overbites, crossbites, and open bites can all be fixed with traditional braces. Instead of continuing to experience enamel erosion and excessive jaw pain, this orthodontic solution can realign your bite over time, allowing you to eat, speak, and enjoy a better quality of life.
Crowded & Crooked Teeth
If your teeth do not have enough room to move, an overcrowded or crooked smile can form. This can inhibit your oral hygiene routine, making it harder to remove bacteria and food particles that commonly cause cavities and gum disease. With traditional braces, the metal brackets and wires can create space between teeth, improving oral health and building a more aesthetically pleasing smile.
Gapped Teeth
Whether you have small or large gaps between your teeth, trapped food and bacterial accumulation are a concern. To prevent oral health problems over time, we can use traditional braces to move your teeth closer together, removing excess space to create a healthier, more beautiful smile.
Caring for Your Braces

While wearing braces, you must commit to proper daily care. They will continue to deliver accurate, desirable results as long as you ensure they remain in optimal shape. You can do this by:
- Practicing at-home oral care by brushing twice a day and after meals for two minutes, using fluoride toothpaste, flossing regularly, and rinsing to remove food particles that brushing and flossing missed.
- Wearing proper mouth protection while playing sports to avoid an orthodontic emergency (i.e., protruding wire, broken bracket, etc.).
- Avoiding hard, crunchy, and sticky foods that can damage your braces or teeth.
- Maintaining your follow-up appointments with our office so that Dr. Muddana can adjust your archwire accordingly to ensure your teeth move in the right direction.
